New Jersey police arrested a 54-year-old man who they say shot his grandmother in the head while she was out of town for Thanksgiving.
The shooting took place on the family farm in Bergen County on Wednesday night.
The woman’s death is being investigated as a homicide, police said.
The man was taken into custody without incident, according to police.
He was arraigned on charges of first-degree murder, criminal possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence, according a statement from Bergen Police.
The victim, identified as Nancy Clack, had lived in the state for more than 40 years.
Her family said she was the sole breadwinner for her four children, ages 4 to 11, who are both in kindergarten.
She was a resident of the town of St. John’s, N.J., for 10 years before moving to New Jersey, the New Jersey Advance reported.
In a Facebook post, her daughter, Ashley, wrote that her mother had “gone through so much in life, but the people who loved her most will always live.”
